Should You Even File an Insurance Claim for Water Damage? What to Weigh First

There's no literal one-claim rule, but claims history does matter. Here's how to weigh whether to file a water damage claim — and the Washington timelines to know.

A claim that comes up a lot in homeowner discussions about water damage: the idea that you can basically only file one water damage claim in your lifetime before you get dropped, so you should think twice before ever calling your insurer. That's an oversimplification of something real — worth untangling, because the actual guidance is more useful than the myth.

What's actually true

There's no literal one-claim rule. But Washington's Office of the Insurance Commissioner does confirm that insurance companies generally consider your claims history when deciding whether to continue your coverage or adjust your premium. That's a real factor — it just isn't a hard limit, and it doesn't mean a single legitimate claim guarantees you'll be dropped.

So how do you decide whether to file?

The state's own guidance points to a practical test: if the damage only slightly exceeds your deductible, paying out of pocket may make more sense than filing, since a small claim still shows up on your history the same way a large one does, for comparatively little benefit. For damage that's genuinely significant, filing is usually the right call — that's what the coverage exists for.

Getting informed before you decide

You don't have to choose between "call insurance immediately" and "never call insurance" as your only two options. Getting a mitigation company out to assess the actual scope and cost of the damage gives you real numbers to weigh against your deductible before you decide whether filing makes sense — rather than guessing either way.

Know the clock you're on

If you do file, Washington insurers generally have 15 business days to accept or deny a claim once they've received your complete paperwork, and up to 30 days to complete their investigation where possible. Knowing that timeline in advance makes it easier to tell normal claims processing from an insurer dragging its feet.

This isn't insurance advice for your specific policy — coverage details vary — but it's a more accurate starting point than "you only get one claim, ever."
